Rose City Style Guide

Taste and style are not easy attributes to uphold but for Amanda Reid, creator and editor of Rose City Style Guide it seems like second nature. With a large following her fashion and style blog is undoubtedly an influence to many Canadian life and style lovers.

We set down with the prominent blogger and got to hear her thoughts on blogging, style, influence and we learned a lot about her and what drives her to create such compelling content.

Let’s Get Started

Many people are passionate about, well, many things but very few make the move to do it. People just look at a distance and admire other people doing it, it takes a lot of heart and guts to put yourself out there and say, “you know what, let me give it a go”.

So you started as a Media Strategist before getting into blogging. Can you talk us through how you made the jump?

I was an avid fan of a bunch of Canadian and American bloggers and thought, “Hey, I can do that!” So, within a few weeks I carved out the idea for my brand Rose City Style Guide, bought the domain and I was off to create some content!

There are many challenges that come with being a blogger, a lot of time goes into it and it can be stressful.

What was the most challenging moment in your blogging journey so far?

Keeping up has always been my biggest challenge. I work a full time job, a husband, friends and family to see and somewhere in between fit blogging into the picture. But to be honest, I wouldn’t have it any other way!

How would you describe your blogging style?

Playful and authentic

Blogging is basically your personal brand, how do you manage time to run your blog efficiently? You must be under a lot of pressure…

Blogging is a lot more than posting an outfit of the day on Instagram. A ton of work goes on behind the scenes in terms of emails, contracts and meetings. Since I work a day job, I spend most of my weekends shooting posts and my week nights editing, writing and catching up on emails.

What do you think is the best strategy that worked well for you to get more traffic to your blog/strengths that have really helped you in blogging?

Consistency is key. This past summer I haven’t done a great job at keeping to my editorial calendar but it really makes a difference in terms of traffic. If your audience knows that they can expect to see something new frequently, they will keep coming back!

Tell me about your proudest achievement or an ‘I’ve made it’ moment in your blog career.

Being named one of the “Top Canadian Bloggers to Bookmark Now” by Shelf Inc. was definitely a “pinch me” moment. I was just so happy to be represented alongside some bloggers I idolize.

Who has impacted you most in blogging and how?

Local photographers have impacted me the most when it comes to blogging. Working with talented creatives like Rachel from Lively Creative Co. and Eryn from Eryn Shea Photography has really upped my game and inspired me to think bigger.

Greatest achievement outside of blogging?

My greatest achievement outside of blogging would be landing my day job. I absolutely love what I do as a Media Strategist. I get to help businesses get from point A to Point B by advising them on a media plan. The media landscape is constantly evolving and it’s really exciting.

What do you do in your spare time?

Even though I don’t get much of it, I spend most of my spare time with my husband, family and friends. Much to my husband’s disappointment- not a lot of my spare time is cooking and cleaning lol.

Weirdest interest?

I think I might be officially addicted to buzzfeed. I check it every morning and throughout the day at the office.

Greatest satisfaction of being a fashion blogger?

The greatest satisfaction of being a blogger has been working with my local mall. It’s such an authentic fit since I shop there endlessly so it’s great to have joined forces to create some content my audience it really interested in.

Who was your first style icon?

My first style icon was Jenna Lyons of J.Crew. The current President of the company has such a classic style that still stands out from a crowd.

Who takes the majority of your photos?

For the past few years, I have worked with Lively Creative Co. for most of my photography but I have also recently teamed up with Eryn Shea Photography. They both are fabulous ladies who make me feel and look great behind the camera!

Biggest challenge about fashion blogging?

Finding the time! It sometimes gets pushed to the bottom of the list, so I am constantly challenged with making the time to invest in Rose City Style Guide

Describe your personal style/is there a person who is a fashion inspiration to you?

My personal style is classic with some trends tossed here and there. I stick to similar silhouettes and neutrals but I am not afraid to add a touch of color from time to time!

You’re on quite a few social media platforms such as  Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram. Which has been most important for you?

Instagram is my personal favorite social media because of its simplicity and design, but Facebook has truly been the backbone of my traffic to Rose City Style Guide.

Any fun plans for this year that we should look out for on social media/your blog?

It’s going to be big year of changes on Rosecitystyleguide.com but nothing I can say just yet! Stay tuned some surprises!

We saw that you really like the Fendi glasses. What made you choose them?

I was looking for more of a retro style to add to my collection and these Fendi glasses were right on the money. They still have a classic shape which I love and they are my first pair of all black frames!

What makes eyewear an important accessory for you?

Even though I won’t wear the same outfit every day, I can totally wear the same sunnies! This is also why I opt to invest in some designer shades knowing I can get way more use out of them than a pair of jeans or a new top.

What trends do you think we’ll see for eyewear this year?

I think we’re going to continue to see more and more retro vibes influencing eyewear, I can’t wait!

What are some of your favorite eyewear styles?

I am obsessed with these Celine Cat Eyes, been eyeing this pair of Tom Ford Classic Glasses to replace my current pair and L-o-v-e these Tom Ford Sunglasses with blue lenses!
