The FDA and Sunglasses
From a young age, children are reminded to wear sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat under the strength of the sun’s rays. As adults, why do so many forget these pearls of wisdom? Temporary blindness caused by overexposure of the cornea to the sun (photokeratitis) is common in adults dwelling in costal cities across the southern hemisphere. Prolonged exposure to damaging UV rays can cause irreversible damage. Here are a few tips for choosing the best pair of sunglasses for eye health.
Before buying a pair of sunglasses, check that they are 99-100% UV protective. Simply buying darker tinted sunglasses will not protect your eyes, and in fact will limit visibility which can endanger you in other ways. Some optometrists stress grey, tan and bronze colored lenses, which are easier for the eye to adapt to.
The American FDA has issued a notification to international sunglasses manufacturers, warning them not to inflate product performance claims. While sunglasses reduce the amount of UV rays entering the eye and also protect the eyes from temporary shock from light changes, in the USA, the only things sunglasses manufacturers are legally allowed to boast of, in relation to sunglasses and health, are helping prevent eye strain and fatigue. They must also pass FDA impact-resistant requirements, ensuring that they will not shatter into your eye. When searching for a pair of sunglasses, remember to ensure they are UV protective and FDA approved (all designer eyewear firms have now agreed to follow FDA impact-resistant requirements).
Finally, an oft overlooked aspect of summer eyewear and health, sun penetrates the eye from multiple angles, and cornea damage can occur from peripheral over exposure. If you are going to be in the sun frequently, chose a pair of sunglasses with wrap-around protection. Police sunglasses, for men, are a strong choice while anything Dior for women, especially with their larger frames in style in 2009.
