When was the last time you saw the infamous Paris Hilton in the limelight, flashing her goods or drinking herself into a stupor in public? Recently, she has cleaned up her image, wearing less revealing clothing (while still designer Gucci and Prada, it is more conservative). She has not been filming any night vision pornography, nor acting in any lousy horror films. She even wrote a book, and is following the lead of her purse-designing sister by taking another look at the fashion industry as a business interest rather than a novel fad. So, is Paris Hilton reigning in her wild side?

We’ve seen Hilton recently in attire that a sexy but conservative politician’s wife would wear on campaign. Her sex appeal is no less apparent, but she has stopped flashing obscure body parts at the camera while stumbling out of her limo in a skirt that could better be described as a belt. While she used to wear oodles of make up and slather her hair in grime, she has recently taken to a more natural look, with limited makeup (still keeping her signature dark eye make up, however) and fewer push-up bras and 2” heels. She is the picture of a modern, fashionable woman, and looks to be priming herself for her inheritance. As her sister has shown, not all heiresses need to be wild, crazy blondes without political, cultural or moral opinions or any stake in their own integrity or character. Indeed, Paris has been grooming this new image for several months, something that may have been brought on by the lifestyle change her longtime friend Nicole Richie underwent, as well as the end of The Simple Life and the impending launch of My New Best Friend.

Alexander McQueen was well known in the fashion industry as an icon of modern avant garde design. With innovative and experimental fashion, he managed to bridge the gap between futuristic and fashionable, making new materials and shapes feminine and sexual and expanding the repertoire of the fashion world by leaps and bounds.

Sadly, Alexander McQueen’s recent and tragic death will be felt by the fashion community as a sore loss. His creativity and vision will leave a shining gold path for future designers, and the designs left uncreated due to his early demise are a dark spot in the fashion realm. Having designed for Givenchy, Gigli, and Gucci before launching his own very successful label, McQueen was most well known for designing the “bumster” which spawned the subsequent low-rise jean fad that persists to this day.

If that were not enough for one designer to achieve in his career, McQueen also holds the title of the youngest designer to achieve the British Designer of the Year award, which he won four times. He was also International Designer of the Year in 2000, and had stores across the globe. He was well sought after by other design houses, when Gucci acquired Alexander McQueen (the label) Mr. McQueen came on board as creative director, and was actively involved in the company’s new direction. Later, McQueen expanded his resume by helping design shoes for Puma, and a MAC make-up line inspired by Cleopatra and Elizabeth Taylor, which meant McQueen was free to fuse modern technology and avant garde Egyptian colors to result in a fashionable and fresh alternative for women’s make up.

us1601.JPGSocialite and heiress to the Johnson & Johnson fortune Casey Johnson passed away on December 29th in her home. With startlingly good fashion sense (rivaling friend Paris even!) like her pairing of Versace clothing with Prada eyewear, and a fun personality used to the limelight, Casey will be missed.

Casey began life with a silver spoon in her mouth, but soon discovered that she was diabetic. Her father, Robert Wood Johnson, dedicated much of his early fatherhood to helping find a cure for the disease that afflicted his daughter. While not cure for diabetes yet exists, great headway has been made in coping with the disease. Her father and her co-wrote a book on dealing with diabetes when she was 14, no small feat for a youngster, and a demonstration that Casey was more than just a socialite and heiress.

Though she was playmates with Paris and Nicky Hilton, and Nicole Riche, Casey managed to remain a bit more responsible than her friends. She did have her moments in the spotlight, but overall remained a foundation unto herself.
She adopted a young girl from Kazakhstan in 2007 named Ava, whom she cared for lovingly. In addition, Casey was an outspoken supporter of homosexuality.

As a lesbian, she was often on the front pages as an unofficial spokesman for her way of life. Casey and her bisexual partner Tila Tequila were engaged on December 9th, 2009, just mere days before her death on the 29th. While police claim the death appeared natural, we await the release of toxicology reports.

us1201.JPGBritney Murphy was a beacon of light in the film industry both for her peppy upbeat personality and her dedication to realistic cinema. Her sense of fashion goes unrivaled in Hollywood as a mixture of a throw-back to 1950s glamour and modern street sense. She could pair Ray Ban Wayfarers with a retro business suit and make it look coordinated and fresh, no small feat.

Britney Murphy will be sorely missed. Her sudden death on December 20th from apparent cardiac arrest shocked a nation in the middle of the holiday season. The cause of death, though called natural by doctors at the Cedars-Sanai Medical Center, is under review as we await toxicology reports. Murphy was buried on Christmas Eve at Forrest Lawn Hollywood Hills, a far cry from her birthplace in Atlanta, Georgia.

us1201_1.JPGThough she is gone, Murphy continues to act as a role model to inspiring young actresses. Murphy and her mother moved to California so she could pursue her acting dream. Her charm and unique look made landing roles relatively easy at an early age, and her wit allowed her to land a major breakthrough role in Clueless. Her charm was never-ending, and Murphy’s last film Abandoned, will be released this year.

Her sense of fashion continues to be un-replicable and defies trends, norms and fads to be purely Murphy. With Dior accessories and sunglasses she would pair a low-key sundress with flip flops- a whole new way to wear Dior, and Murphy was like that with everything in life. She played down the seriousness of everything and just had fun. She will be missed.

us1030.JPGFergi, the single-named female star of the Black Eyed Peas, has launched her own solo singing career with wild success and her sense of style has becomes something others have begun to emulate in awe. From Ray Bans to Versace, Fergie shows she knows her stuff in the fashion world.

In Ray Bans, Fergie plays queen with confidence; this long-standing look was perfect for the diva as she inched her way into the music industry as a solo singer. As she expanded, however, she began to spread her fashion wings into the more risky and creative designs, like Versace. Fergie’s Versace favorite (and a design many other celebs have gotten behind since) is the Versace 4114, a classy and simple style that goes above and beyond the safety of the Wayfarer.

Improving her style and edging into the extremely risky fashion choices, Fergie tries her hand at rocking the Chloe look, which is more bug-like and flashy than anything she’d tried since. With mixed reviews (but more confidence than ever) Fergie stormed through Hollywood in fashion.
Pushing the envelope a bit further, Fergie wears Dolce Gabbana DG 2030, a more masculine and edgy design with a near futuristic appeal. Here she is truly spreading her independent wings and showing her real self, a self that is reflected in her music.

At the American Idol finale Fergie and the Black Eyed Peas sang their Boom Boom Pow hit as Fergie stole the show before and after with her exuberant sunglasses by Republica. Criticized in the fashion media, we agree that Fergie has gone too far and should reel in the futuristic look and stick to the brands that she looks best in, Ray Bans and Dolce Gabbana.

us1013.JPGEver the innovator, Snoop Dogg continues to wow us with his witty one-liners and his endless supply of creative fashion twists. In the world of eyewear fashion this Dogg is king!

Snoop in Armani – Snoop donned a pair of classy white Armani Exchange -028 sunglasses last week, unveiling a new look that is crisper and cleaner than his usual hoodie costume. We totally approve of Snoop in white, which brings out his features and serves to make him more approachable than the usual Snoop.

Snoop in Carrera—Snoop stole the show in a classy pair of designer Carrera shades with gold rims. Gold is definitely one of the Dogg’s favorite colors, and he makes this well known with his music and style choices.

Snoop in Ray Bans — In days long past, Snoop was known to sport a classy pair of Ray Ban Wayfarers in various shades, a look popular in the rap community then (as it remains to this day!) Ray Bans are a sure bet, no matter who you are, but the wayfarer look is sure to remain a popular one in the music industry for ages to come, with stars like Snoop donning them regularly as billboard advertisements to the brand’s fame.

Snoop in Armani – Everyone knows Armani makes great eyewear, and Snoop is no fool! His Armani, top-of-the-line look is perfect for awards shows and guest appearances. Snoop breaks out his Armani look on special occasions, and wears his other classy shades as casual wear, upping his pimp factor.

Actor, dancer, singer-songwriter and inspirational hero Patrick Swayze has died of pancreatic cancer at age 57. The actor continued his trade up until his death despite the diagnosis twenty months prior of the cancer.

We admired Swayze for his rugged, Ray Ban-like fashion, his sense of morality apparent in his personal life and in his films, and for his ability to make us smile. He continued acting despite the
diagnosis because he felt leaving something beautiful and memorable behind would be a great legacy.

Some of the films that made him popular include: Ghost, Dirty Dancing, The Outsiders, Roadhouse, Point Break, Donnie Darko, Waking up in Reno and many more, including his last two creations in 2009: Powder Blue and The Beast.

Always living on the edge, Swayze is known to many as an adrenaline junkie who just couldn’t get enough. He made the news in 2000 by crash-landing his troubled Cessna on a dirty road in a small town, and then walking away unharmed. On the set of Point Break, it was revealed that Swayze was logging real sky-diving jumps while crew members on set were installing the green screens for the jump sequences in the film.

We love Patrick Swayze for his unpretentious fashion sense and his “real-world” charm. He acted like a guy who lived next door, and in fact married his childhood sweetheart, whom he met at dance lessons when he was 18.
Swayze is survived by his wife, Lisa Niemi, they had no children.

us1002.jpgShould we drop our Kanye Sunglasses? This king of eyewear fashion, from Carerra to Versace and even Prada, has hurt his image. After Kanye’s now infamous outburst at the VMA awards, a sour taste was left in our mouths as we thought about how the sweet Taylor Swift must have felt having her art slammed by a singing legend…right in front of her!

Since the disrespectful outburst, Kanye has blamed his actions on the death of his mother, who passed two years ago, and on passion for music. On the Jay Leno show he apologized again to Miss Swift, but to little effect because he followed up the apology with a comment revealing how he still believes Beyonce should have won the award.

The hype seems to have no bounds as President Obama goes on record calling Kanye a “Jackass.” Not very presidential, in our opinion. Nevertheless, with the Kanye image spoiled, will his fashion trends tumble as well? Kanye is responsible for the huge fame of the shutter-style sunglasses as well as making larger-than-life sunglasses popular for men (like the frames in the image) from Carrera and other designer brands. We idolized Kanye for his singing ability as well as for his fashion sense, but this outburst has put a damper on our affection.

While there is little doubt that Kanye messed up, we think we’ll give the guy a break, hold on to our sunglasses with pride, and hope that he can graciously exit himself from this crisis and move on with more tact in the future. Lesson here: a drunk Kanye makes for an unwelcomed and not amusing onstage breakdown.

Jamie Foxx, who has inspired us all with his singing, acting and humanitarian work, now amazes us with his fashion sense. Proving that he is more than a flash in the pan, Foxx lingers in our afterthoughts as a star to watch throughout the next few years. Here is why he is a fashion guru in addition to his stunning acting and singing talents.

Jamie Foxx strolled on the big screen on American Idol in Carrera Safaris as a mentor, shocking viewers and inspiring the young singers. The Carreras look great on the singer/actor/mentor, and we give him a thumbs up for style as well as mentoring. Despite the rock star look, these Carrera sunglasses will only set you back about 120$ so you can get the look without hurting your wallet.

In what fashion writers call a ‘splurge of inspiration’ the wardrobe personnel on Miami Vice put Jamie Foxx in Robert Marc 710s, which look like they were designed specifically for him. We like this look, it doesn’t overpower his natural appeal, nor does it distract from the new goatee or clean-lined haircut.

In the spirit of keeping it real, Jamie Foxx takes the stage in Gucci 1596s, which are a very Malcolm X design with a broader top bar and medium temple bars. They look alright on Foxx, but we prefer a more modern look for this modern renaissance man.

Finally, in the movie that made him famous, Jamie Foxx looks every bit the part of Ray Charles in Ray Ban Wayfarers worn on stage while singing. Jamie Foxx can pull of any look, but we think these looks especially cool on him. Ray Bans look good on anyone, so on Jamie, they looked utterly delicious.

Anyone who is anyone knows who Danny Gokey is, but for those of you living under a rock, he was the eyewear king of season 8 of American Idol who appeared on stage in a different pair of designer eyewear every episode (until voted off as 2nd runner up). Since leaving the show, Danny’s life has not become less busy or complicated, with constant interviews amid trying to launch his own singing career, Danny is constantly hounded by media and fashion fanatics about his eyewear. USA TODAY (above image) even did an article about Danny’s fashionable (and expensive) eyewear, questioning how the young man was able to afford such luxury.

us0911.JPG

Despite his funding regime (buying on sites like smartbuyglasses.com, for one) Danny has proven he is a stylish cat, making the need to wear prescription glasses also his defining characteristic while on stage. His favorite brand of eyewear- D&G, because of the modern, clean lines that make this country boy look city good.

Since Sarah Plain, no one has raised such interest on the internet about eyewear as Danny, whose image has become synonymous with designer brands. According to Danny, he had additional pairs of designer glasses he wanted to wear while performing, but they were not okayed because they gave unfair advertising to companies who had not provided ad revenue to the show. A particular pair of D&G glasses with the logo boldly painted on the side were rejected by producers as overt product placement. With all the product placements from apple, ford, at&t and coke, what is one more brand, and a designer one at that! Whatever the issues, we hope Danny will continue to be an eyewear king!
