Eyewear in Iron Man 2
Filed Under Designer Sunglasses, Fun with Eyewear | View Comments
The recent release of the much awaited Iron Man sequel has been heavily applauded by adoring fans. While the film’s action-packed plot is never boring, the fashion choices of the mega billionaire Tony Stark (Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr.) are a bit awkward and frat boyish. His red Wayfarer-like sunglasses while eating a donut in full Iron Man suit looks cheeky and contrived. They were made by Vonzipper, the Fulton model. Nevertheless, they look identical to Ray Ban Wayfarers, albeit with a bit of shark strip designs on the front.
But that isn’t the only pair of boy band eyewear Tony Stark’s slips into in Iron Man 2. He also wears a pair of Carerra-like tortoiseshell sunglasses made by Initium called ‘London Calling.’ These, like his red glasses mentioned above, are childish and don’t fit the character of Stark one bit. May we have a word with the costume designer, please!
While Tony Stark is completely ridiculous in his array of lame sunglasses, his counterpart, Justin Hammer, looks shockingly like Austin Powers with his fluffy red hair and thick, black framed eyeglasses. His British suits and flashy (yet cheap looking) accessories make him look like a complete cartoon! Seriously, get the costume director, pronto!
But that isn’t all! The primary villain played by Mickey Rourke is supposed to be broke, but he is wearing about seventeen different kinds of designer eyeglasses, goggles and sunglasses throughout the film. Where was the director on this one? Why does a Russian super-villain wear plastic, designer frames that look like something Meryl Streep would own? Eyewear can really make or break a character on the big screen and in Iron Man 2 someone dropped the ball!

Lady Gaga’s Fashion and Fame
Filed Under Brand Wave, Celebrity Watch, Designer Sunglasses | View Comments
Some people think Lady Gaga has take fashion too far, too fast. After looking at the ridiculous outfits online in bulk, I have to agree. While she can look fashionable and hot (like in the Carrera sunglasses in the image here) she seems to miss the mark when she dresses up entirely in Kermit the Frog corpses and goes out in public.
Her sense of fashion may be completely backward, but she does manage to use eyewear in a completely creative way. She isn’t trying to make her face look the most attractive it possibly can. Instead she is playing the female Willy Wonka and trying to make herself look as unique (and odd?) as possible. Check her out in these otherwise normal Tom Ford, rounded bronze sunglasses. The sunglasses would look amazing on any actress, take Angelina Jolie for example. Yet Lady Gaga uses them to give herself an almost alien look, a wide-eyed mechanical appearance that is neither sexy nor hip. While she may see the fashion of the future and try to introduce it now, we’re thinking she’s from a different planet!
Finally, Lady Gaga’s embarrassing clothing choice while at the Grammys and the Oscars may draw attention to her, it leaves many thinking that she is trying to distract viewer’s attention from other things. Without the glamorous makeup and ridiculous clothing would Lady Gaga stand a chance in Hollywood? Her lyrics and music are only somewhat inventive, but she really stands out in her music videos and daily clothing choices. Without that, she really isn’t much different from other female pop stars!

Spring is here! Tis’ the season for fresh new colors, new fabrics, new scents and new fashion! Toss your dark Ray Ban aviators into the closet for now, those are summer sunglasses, get a fresh and vibrant pair of Ray Ban Wayfarers and spice up your wardrobe with color, fun and spring. Fold up your dark browns, your jewel tones, your blacks and greys. Winter is over! Its time to unpack your sundresses, try on your sandals, and go gaga for floppy-billed hats and cute denim shorts.
Accessorizing for spring for many simply means slapping on brighter colors. While this is one method, a more practical way to accessorize is to start from your head down. Spring is a great time to try a new haircut. If you’ve ever wanted to try a perm, cut your hair short, or try a new color now is the time. From there, lets buy a few orange-pink shades of lipstick and a brighter color of blush. Hats are always in style when done right, but on a day-to-day basis it’s not like you can wear a hat in the office. Sunglasses are a much smarter way to spend your hard-earned greenbacks. Fun, bright and vibrant sunglasses are the best way to show you are a seasonal roller. Your eyes are the first and last place people look when addressing you, so make them stand out in style. Ray Bans are always cool, but you can try fresh looks by Nike if you are more athletic, or Dior’s spring eyewear if more urban. Good luck this spring, and remember to start from your head down!

In the world of fashion and design, nothing is more important than innovation. Without constant change and movement, the industry would die. The evolution of design is not so much in a straight line as it is in a concentric array of circles. Bell bottoms, for example, were in fashion in my parent’s youth, then after a 30 year break they were back in style again briefly in mine. In the world of high fashion, cyclical discoveries are common, but we’re more interested in true innovation, like the now famous shudder sunglasses design that Prada has since perfected.
And Prada is no wimp on the innovation scene. Their creativity in shoes is unparalleled (although Alexander McQueen has done a nice job bending the laws of anatomy to fit décor). Prada’s sunglasses often get the reputation of being all black, simple and elegant. While there is this element to the Prada design house, you can also find some of their more daring and bold innovations, as well as some flops that will hardly sell. But even the loser designs help widdle away what is not fashionable to reveal what it.
Alexander McQueen’s modern designs are impeccable. From shoes to his biggest splash in eyewear. If you really want to look modern, and yet as creative as possible, then Alexander McQueen is undoubtedly the designer for you. Some visions of the future portray us in skin-tight matching suits, Alexander McQueen goes against the idea of fashion as conformity and opens up the idea of a future as unique as our rainbow of personalities.

America’s Sexiest Women
Filed Under Blogroll, Fun with Eyewear | View Comments
Every year, magazines like FHM and Maxim put out their hottest babes lists. Now its our turn, and our criteria is a bit different. We’re looking for intelligent, beautiful women who wear designer glasses, like Dior or Ray Ban, and who are not embarrassed about making smart look hot. Only one woman can top this list- and that’s the rising star of Tina Fey, who uses her amazing brain in cohorts with her great looks to bring America witty, insightful (often satirical) comedy.
From Saturday Night Live to 30 Rock, and now most recently in Date Night, Tina Fey has proven she can withstand the pressure of fame as well as the responsibilities of parenthood. She is married to composer Jeff Richmond, who does the music for 30 Rock. They have a child, Alice, together and live in NY City. One interesting tid-bit about Tina Fey is her small, barely visible scar on the left lower face. She was playing in her childhood yard at age 5 when someone came into the yard and slashed her face.
Kate Walsh, from Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice is another sexy, intelligent woman who wears spectacles. Her character, Dr. Addison Montgomery, is a highly intelligent, witty and fun person, which mirrors the person she is in real life. An avid promoter of narcolepsy research and awareness, she is also a strong supporter of Planned Parenthood, as well as puppy adoption centers across the US. She was a firm supporter of then candidate Obama, and did commercials in support of his candidacy.
